20 Shot in Teenkune Protest, 13 Under Treatment

A violent protest by a pro-monarchy group on Friday led to 20 people being shot.

According to central police spokesperson Dinesh Acharya, the police fired shots while trying to control the protest, injuring 20 people, including two women.

One person, Sabin Maharjan from Lalitpur, died after being shot. In Koteshwor’s Shankar Marg, Revika and Dinesh Khatri were injured.

Police reported that 13 of the injured are still receiving treatment in different hospitals. As per the Metropolitan Police Office, the police fired 746 rounds of tear gas and 192 blank shots during the protest.

The police also fired 58 warning shots in the air, 239 shotgun rounds, and 2 pistol rounds. This data is from the Nepal Police only; the Armed Police Force also fired shots on Friday.

Many people are criticizing the excessive use of force by the police.
